Abstract

Background. Аn antimicrobial polymer composition based on acrylic bone cement and antibacterial drugs in the treatment of patients with chronic osteomyelitis and periimplant infection are widely used in clinical practice. The purpose of the study is to assess the strength characteristics of bone cement based on polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), impregnated with antibacterial drugs, for axial compression. Materials and methods. Six series of in vitro experiments were performed using CC based on PMMA Synicem1 (France). In each series, after mixing the components of the polymer composition, a disc with a diameter of 45-50 mm and a thickness of 5-7 mm was made by hand. The samples obtained from acrylic CC were tested on an LFM 125 kN electromechanical testing machine (Walter + Bai, Switzerland) with a load in the range of 10-10000 N. Results. The strength of acrylic bone cement Synicem 1 exceeds the permitted strength in accordance with GOST ISO 5833-2011 At the same time, a significant decrease in the strength characteristics of CC Synicem 1 was noted with the addition of antimicrobial drugs in the form of a liquid in series 4 (p <0.0001) and 5 (p <0.0001). Conclusion. The strength characteristics of polymerized samples of acrylic bone cement Synicem 1 correspond to GOST ISO 5833–2011. The mechanical strength of polymerized samples of acrylic bone cement Synicem 1 significantly decreases with the addition of liquid antibacterial components, which must be taken into account in clinical practice.
